| Tubac
has been described as where history meets art. Also called the “Sedona
of Southern Arizona and internationally known as Arizona’s
only true artist colony, it offers 97 galleries and studios. It
is 40 miles south of Tucson and 30 miles north of Nogales off the
I-19.
Established
in 1752 as a Spanish presidio (fort), it has transformed over the
years into a working artists’ colony and a popular destination
spot for vacationers who desire Tubac’s ideal winter and all-year-round
climate.
With
very little rain-fall from November through July coupled with mild
day-time temperatures, Tubac offers many outside activities unavailable
during the winter months in other parts of the country such as golf,
birding, hiking, many places of historical and natural interest.
When the rains come at the end of the summer, they offer a cooler,
more refreshing environment for those from the lower desert areas
such as from Tucson and Phoenix. Tubac can be 10 to 20 degrees cooler
than can Phoenix because of it’s higher elevation (3200 feet).
Places
to visit and activities to take note of while staying in Tubac include:
The Tubac Presidio State Historic Park (within walking distance
of The Anza Inn), the Tumacacori National Historical Park, the Anza
Trail, mountain biking, birding in the cottonwood bosques, golfing
at the newly renovated and internationally known Tubac Golf Resort
and Rio Rico’s Robert Trent Jones championship course, horseback
riding, and nearby destinations like Patagonia, Kartchner Caverns
and a remarkable ghost town at Ruby. Other places include the Titan
Missile Museum in Green Valley, the Smithsonian’s Whipple
Observatory atop Mount Hopkins, only 15 minutes from Tubac, Madera
Canyon (hiking, birding, mountain biking, and picnicking), and Pena
Blanca Lake (hiking and picnicking).
Every
year, there is the Annual Tubac Art Festival sponsored by the Tubac
Chamber of Commerce. The major event showcases the work of hundreds
of visiting artists, craft person and musicians from around the
country and Canada. Every year in February is the Annual Tubac Art
Festival. Contact Tubac Chamber of Commerce at 520.398.2704 for
more details and dates.
